About

Hilsher is the definition of a grumpy old man. He is very stubborn, holds grudges forever, and doesn't talk a lot. He prefers being outside with his yaks and his herding dogs all day every day.

He just wasn't made for family life, not even indoor life, even though he tried to make it work when his and Yora's children were still young. Child number one wasn't planned, and Hilsher still quite young, less grumpy and more social, so he was easily convinced that nuclear family life with a beautiful woman and healthy, rowdy children should be something that he wants. Unfortunately he just never managed to like it. He loved and still loves his family, just not the circumstances of permanently living with his family.

After Jhamar was born, he started extending his time out with his yak herd more and more and by the time Keetur completed the family, Yora and Hilsher had already decided to open up their relationship (or rather, Hilsher had absolutely no interest in cultivating any other relationships, but he didn't mind if Yora did). They found a balance of him being a good playmate for the kids and outdoors teacher, but also respecting him needing a lot of time off, which worked because Yora cultivated her own support system. After a few more years, Yora and Hilsher amicably decided to call it quits and just stay friends.

Appearance

Hilly is a bit of a haggard-looking Goliath. Bald on the top of his head, but still some white hair behind his ears and at the back of his head that he ties into a ponytail. A scruffy goatee finishes the picture. Unlike anyone else in his family, he's definitely as old as he looks, probably even older. A withered tree of a man.

Trivia

  • Hilsher's mother was also a yak-herder and they both cared for the herd until she passed.
  • Now it's Keetur who is helping his father to protect the herd (and to make sure his old man doesn't forget to eat).
  • In the aftermath of his granddaughter Ravanu's death, he developed a grudge against Tovahra that he's been too stubborn to fully let go of, which put a strain on his relationship with his family that also has never fully gone away.
  • Unavar only ever met her grandfather without Tovahra present. On the rare occasion that he would show up when she visited her grandma with both of her mothers, Tovah would quite simply disappear instantly just to not have to interact with him.
